Confused about Aveiro fees and the visa timeline

I got my Aveiro admission last month and every person I ask tells me a different story. One says pay the registration immediately or the embassy won't touch my file. Another swears nothing is due until you land in Portugal. My VFS appointment is in a few weeks and I'd hate for a missing receipt to be the thing that sinks it. What did you actually pay, and at what point?

I did Aveiro in 2025 so this is recent. The only money that left my account before the consulate stage was the registration charge, roughly a hundred euros. Tuition waited until I had keys to a room in Portugal. And if the consulate turns you down, the university returns what you paid. A classmate of mine got her refund in about three weeks.

Which programme are you in? For the masters intake they attach a payment reference to the acceptance email, but that's a seat reservation, not tuition. Whatever you put down gets knocked off your first instalments later.

Adding a counterpoint since my info is two intakes old. When I sorted this out for my younger sister, her enrolment certificate only appeared once the registration payment cleared. The process may well have moved on, but I wouldn't book a consulate slot until that paper is in your inbox.

Here's the odd bit then. My certificate landed by email on Tuesday and my student portal shows zero payments made. Either something changed this year or masters and licenciatura run on different rules.

does your certificate mention insurance anywhere? mine from Bragança had a line about accident cover and the officer at my appointment checked for exactly that

It does, there's a paragraph on personal accident cover for enrolled students. The money side is spelled out too: €5,000 for the year across ten monthly payments starting September, the €100 registration due that same month, and one sentence saying tuition can wait until after you've arrived in Portugal. That sentence is what I'm leaning on.

One thing I wish someone had told me: save the refund policy somewhere permanent. Screenshot the fees page, keep the emails. The consulate never asks for it, but if your plans collapse you want the promise in writing from Aveiro, not from a forum thread.

Worth saying that none of this transfers between universities. Porto wanted my cousin's whole first semester before issuing anything, while a friend at Beira Interior paid zero until she registered for classes in person. Each rectorate sets its own rules, so always confirm with your own faculty.

Update for anyone who finds this later: I submitted at VFS yesterday with just the enrolment certificate and my registration receipt. Nobody asked a single question about tuition. Will post again once there's a decision.
