NIF before or after arriving? (AIMA timing)

Everyone says get your NIF first, but I can't tell if I should do it remotely through a representative or wait until I land. Does the timing affect the AIMA appointment at all?

Get it before - a fiscal representative can do it remotely in a week or two. It unblocks the bank account and rental contract, which you'll want sorted before AIMA.

Get your NIF first - it's needed for almost everything: signing a lease, a phone contract, and opening a bank account. You can request it in person at a Finanças office, or remotely through a tax representative before you arrive. Coming from outside the EU, a representative is the usual route until you have a local address.
