What documents you actually need once you're admitted (and who can fund you)

The first list window has closed, but the embassy usually publishes further lists, so a lot of people here are still waiting to submit. The same document questions keep coming round, so here is what I actually put in front of the officer last year. I did Lagos, the pack is the same at Abuja.

What I submitted:

National visa application form, filled in and signed
Passport, valid well past the end of your course, plus photocopies of the bio page
Two recent passport photos
Admission or enrolment letter from your institution
Proof of accommodation in Portugal
Proof of means of subsistence for the year (this is the one that trips people up, see below)
Travel and health insurance covering medical costs and repatriation
Criminal record certificate
The form authorising them to check your Portuguese criminal record
Letter of intent
Proof you paid the visa fee

Two things worth flagging. The letter of intent is not a formality, it is where you explain who you are and why this course. And "proof of means" looks like one tidy line on a checklist, but it changes completely depending on whether you are paying, your parents are, or someone else is. Ask below if your case is unusual, someone here has probably seen it.

Bring printed copies and the originals. Check the current list on the official notice before you travel to VFS, the requirements do move.

This is useful, thank you. My dad is funding me from his business account. Does the money have to sit in my name, or is his statement enough on its own?

His statement can carry it, but not on its own. Where a parent is funding you, plan on:

A signed sponsorship letter from him saying he is covering your studies and living costs, and for how long
His bank statements, showing the money has been there rather than landing last week
Proof of where his income comes from: employment letter and payslips, or the business registration and tax filings if he is self-employed
Your birth certificate, so the relationship is on paper
A copy of his passport or national ID

The relationship proof is the piece people forget. A parent sponsor is the most straightforward case there is, but only once the officer can see on paper that he is your father.

The exact amount and the period the statements need to cover are on the official notice for this intake. Check there rather than going off what worked for someone last year, those details change between intakes.

What about when it is not a parent? My uncle in Porto has offered to cover me and a family friend wants to top it up. Is that going to look strange?

Not strange, just held to a higher standard. With a parent, the relationship explains the money. With an uncle or a friend it does not, so you have to explain it yourself.

Same financial pack as above from whoever is actually paying: sponsorship letter, bank statements, proof of their income, ID. On top of that:

A short written statement of how you know them and why they are funding you. Keep it factual and specific.
Anything that backs the connection up. For an uncle, documents showing the family link. For a friend, evidence the relationship is real and predates your application.
If the sponsor lives in Portugal, ask them about a termo de responsabilidade. It is a formal statement of responsibility and it carries weight. Their residence card and proof of address go with it.

Two sponsors splitting the cost is allowed, but it doubles your paperwork because each of them needs the full set. If your uncle can cover it on his own, that is the cleaner file.

Mine should be simpler then, I am paying out of my own savings. Does that mean I skip the sponsor part entirely?

You skip the sponsor letter, yes. What replaces it is proof the savings are genuinely yours and genuinely stable:

Your own bank statements
Where the money came from: salary, your business, sale of a property, whatever it is
If a large sum landed recently, be ready to show its origin

Self-funding is the least paperwork and the most scrutiny per document, if that makes sense. A balance that appeared a fortnight before you applied invites the obvious question, and it is better to answer it in the file than at the counter.

Going back to the letter of intent. How long should it be, and does anyone actually read it?

Someone reads it. Mine was one page, signed and dated, and it covered:

Who I am and what I have done up to now
The exact programme and institution, and why that one
How it connects to what I had already studied
How it is being paid for, which matched what my financial documents said
What I plan to do afterwards, and my ties back home

Keep it plain. It is not a personal essay and it is not a job cover letter. The officer is checking that your story, your money and your admission letter all describe the same person. Where people come unstuck is writing something heartfelt that quietly contradicts their own bank statements.
