Embassy of Portugal in Abuja has suspended new visa applications

The Embassy of Portugal in Abuja published a notice on 20 July 2026: Temporary suspension of new visa applications.

What it says:

From 20 July 2026, the submission of new visa applications for Portugal through VFS Global in Abuja and Lagos is temporarily suspended.
Applications submitted before that date continue to be processed under the applicable legal framework.
Passports and final decisions are still returned through VFS Global.
The suspension is temporary and stays in place until further notice from the Embassy.

Things the notice does not say, so please do not assume them: it does not break the suspension down by visa category, it lists no exemptions, and it gives no reopening date.

If you have a file already in the system, this does not cancel it. If you were waiting to submit, there is nothing to submit into at the moment. Reopening will be announced on the Embassy's news page, which is the same place this came from.

I have a VFS appointment booked for next week. Is that slot dead now, or does a booking made before the 20th still count as being in the system?

And does this touch the scheduling lists at all? People are already saying the second admitted-students list is off because of this.

Taking those separately, because the notice answers one and is silent on the other.

On your appointment. The notice suspends the submission of new applications. It draws the line at applications submitted by 20 July, not at appointments booked by then, and it says nothing either way about slots already in the calendar. So I cannot tell you your booking survives, and nobody here can. Contact VFS or the Embassy's consular section directly and get it confirmed for your reference number before you travel to the centre.

On the lists. The notice says nothing about the scheduling lists and nothing about admissions. Read it narrowly: a suspension of submissions is not a cancellation of anyone's place at an institution, and treating it as one is how people abandon an admission they still hold. If a further list is published, it will come from the Embassy, not from a forum.
