Refused at the embassy. What actually happens next?

I got my refusal and I have been staring at the letter since. Applied in Abuja, walked in with what I was sure was a complete file, and it came back refused.

There is a reason on it, but it is one line and I do not really understand what it means in practice. My course starts in September. I have already paid a deposit on a room. Right now I genuinely do not know whether to appeal, apply again, or just let it go.

Has anyone here actually been through this? Not the theory, what did you do.

Sorry, that is a rough morning.

Before you do anything else, read the notice properly and write down exactly what it says, word for word, including any reference number on it. Everything you do next hangs on that one line.

What I have watched people do is panic and fire off a fresh application inside a week. If the new one does not deal with the reason they gave you, it tends to come back the same way, and now you have paid twice.

It says insufficient proof of means of subsistence.

Which is the part I was most nervous about, honestly. My brother is sponsoring me and the statements are in his name, not mine. I did put in a letter from him. Looking at it again I am not sure I put in much around it.

That is one of the most common reasons given, and it is also one of the more fixable ones. So take some heart.

There are two broad routes from here.

Appeal the decision. You are arguing the refusal was wrong on the file as you submitted it. Your refusal notice sets out the appeal route and the time limit that goes with it. That window is short, and it is written on your letter, so read it today rather than over the weekend.

Apply again with a stronger file. Here you are not arguing with anyone, you are removing the reason they gave. It feels slower, but it is often the cleaner path when the gap in the file was real.

Which one fits depends on an honest answer to one question: was the file actually complete? If you sent everything and they overlooked it, an appeal is arguable. If the sponsorship pack was thin, a fresh application that fixes it is usually the better use of your money.

On your specific reason, with a sibling sponsoring you, what is normally missing is the material tying your brother both to you and to the money: a signed sponsorship letter, his statements covering the period they ask for, proof of where his income comes from, and something documenting that he is your brother. That is the same pack people worked through in the documents thread.

This is the case worth paying for advice on. It is time limited, the deadline is not yours to negotiate, and you realistically get one clean run at an appeal. If you want someone to read the actual wording on your notice: Talk to a lawyer.

Practical thing while it is all still in one place: scan everything today.

Your full application copy, the payment receipts, the refusal notice with its reference, and any email that went back and forth. If you appeal, that is your evidence. If you re-apply, you will be asked about the earlier decision anyway. The version of you in three weeks will not remember which folder any of it went into.

My cousin was refused over insurance that did not cover repatriation. One line, same as yours, and he was convinced it was over.

He bought the right policy, submitted again, and it went through. A refusal is usually one nameable thing rather than a verdict on you. The trap is guessing at which thing it was and fixing the wrong one.

Does a refusal follow you around though? I keep hearing that it sits on your record and every application you make afterwards is harder.

You are normally asked to declare previous refusals, so what matters most is answering that question straight.

A refusal you declare, and have since dealt with, reads very differently from one they find that you left out. The harder problem is never the refusal on its own, it is a gap between what you wrote and what they can already see. Fix the reason, declare the history, and you are on solid ground.

Thank you, all of this helped more than I expected when I posted this morning.

I have found the reference and the exact wording, and the letter does give me a deadline, so I am booking a consult before I choose between appealing and applying again. Will come back and post what happens, in case someone finds this later in the same state I was in today.

Kelechi, check this before you decide anything. The embassy published a notice yesterday: Suspensão temporária da receção de novos pedidos de visto.

Dated 20 July 2026. From that date they have temporarily stopped accepting new visa applications for Portugal through VFS Global in Abuja and Lagos. Applications already submitted before then carry on being assessed, and passports and final decisions still come back through VFS as normal. No reopening date is given, it holds until the embassy says otherwise.

Flagging it because applying again was one of your two options, and that door is shut for now.

Re-applying is paused, not just slower. The suspension covers new applications lodged through VFS in Abuja and Lagos, and the notice sets no reopening date. So of the two routes discussed above, only one is actually open today.

Nothing in the notice touches appeal deadlines. It is about the reception of new applications and says nothing about appeals, so do not assume the clock on your refusal notice has been extended. Waiting for reception to reopen is how people lose the appeal window and end up with neither route.

The notice does not break things down by visa category and lists no exemptions, so if you need to know exactly how it applies to your case, confirm with VFS or the embassy rather than going on what any of us assume here.

In the meantime, keep building the stronger sponsorship pack from the documents thread. Whichever route opens first, your file is ready either way. And get the wording on your notice read properly this week: Talk to a lawyer.
